Charlestown was incorporated in 1738 and named for King Charles II, the area was once part of Westerly. Charlestown was divided in 1747 and the north area became known as Richmond. Interestingly, the United States Census Bureau has stated that Charlestown has a total area of 59.3 square miles, of which, 36.8 square miles is land and 22.5 square miles is water. Its beaches can be described as Rhode Island's "best kept secret" by both locals and tourists.
